How To Reheat Chili Properly

How do you reheat chilli (chilli con carne)? It is a question we get asked all the time and when it comes to reheating chilli, it is a quick and easy process.

Below I will highlight the different options you available to you, some however are quicker than others.

The Microwave

For most people, the microwave would be the quick and effective method to use to reheat chilli con carne. The only thing you need to be aware of is that the dish is fully heated up, as often the outside sections are steaming hot, while the inner is still cold.

Steps

  • Place the leftover chilli in a microwave safe container
  • You could add a little bit of water if you find the chilli to be too thick
  • Zap it on the medium-low setting for a couple of minutes (this will depend on the type of microwave you use)
  • Stir the chili in intervals, to ensure the whole dish is reheated properly
  • Remember to be careful, as it could be scalding hot and burn you
  • Once you feel it is fully warmed hot, especially in the middle, take it out
  • Let it cool before eating

The Skillet

If you are not a fan of the microwave like myself or just don’t have one, you can always reheat your chilli in the skillet. This is another quick method and in a couple of minutes, everything should be piping hot and ready to eat.

Steps

  • Preheat frying pan/skillet over a medium flame
  • Add the chili
  • If you find it is too thick, add a little bit of water or red wine
  • Cover and let it simmer, constantly stirring to ensure that the heat is even distributed
  • After a couple of minutes, your dish should be steaming hot and ready to eat
  • Allow to cool, take out and enjoy

What About the Slow Cooker to Reheat Chilli?

While a lot of you do your chilli in the slow cooker, foodsafety.gov does not recommend it for reheating. According to their website:

“We do NOT recommend reheating food or leftovers in a slow cooker. Instead, we advise callers to reheat cooked food to steaming on the stove top or in a microwave oven.”

Once you got it fully reheated, they suggest that “you can put it into a preheated slow cooker to keep it hot for serving. Use a food thermometer to be sure the food stays at 140 °F. or above.”

How to Reheat Sausages

How to reheat sausages properly? The process is not overly complicated and when done properly, people can’t even tell that these sausages came from the fridge or were frozen.

Below, I will show you the 3 methods you can use to reheat your sausages, highlighting the quickest and most effective.

Can You Reheat Sausages?

You can absolutely reheat sausages and you have many options available at your disposal (explained below). When it comes to reheating food like sausages, the main thing you need to be aware of is that is reheated thoroughly.

According to foodsafety.gov, when reheating leftovers, be sure they reach 165° F. It is always good to use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of the food. This will ensure that all the bacteria that could possibly make you sick are destroyed.

The Microwave

When it comes to reheating a sausage, the microwave is the quickest and most effective option available. It will only take a couple minutes to get it steaming hot.

Steps:

  • Place the sausages in a microwave safe plate/container
  • Place a damp paper towel/cloth over the sausage
  • Microwave on low for 30 seconds to 1 minute
  • Some microwaves are not as powerful as others, so check to ensure that inside the sausage is fully heated. If not, continue heating for another 30 seconds.
  • Once it is steaming out, take out, let it cool and enjoy.

The Oven

If you are a fan of the oven over the microwave, then this is another option to consider. While it takes a bit longer, you can get better results, as the sausages tend to come out slightly crispy (depending on how long you leave them in)

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Place sausages on a baking sheet or Pyrex dish.
  • Place the sausages in the oven and let them reheat from 10-15 minutes.
  • If you have a food thermometer, you can check to see if the internal temperature is 165° F.
  • If they are not fully reheated, you can leave them in for another 5 minutes.
  • Once reheated, take them out and let them cool before serving.

Steaming Them

Steaming is another option to consider when it comes to reheating sausages, especially ones that have been grilled.

Food Republic highlighted that steaming is the best option for grilled sausages as you get to retain the same taste and texture. While it is not the same as fresh off the grill, it is better than nothing.

Steps:

  • Put on a pot of water to boil on the stove.
  • You can throw the sausages in the water, but it would be best to put them in a Ziploc bag.
  • Let the sausages reheat for about 10 minutes, once finished they should be steaming hot and the internal temperature be around 165° F.

Are you worried about using Ziploc bags in the boiling water? This article highlights why Ziploc bags are perfectly ok to use for sous-vide cooking.

How to Reheat a Baked Potato

How do you reheat a baked potato? While it is best to eat a potato when it is fresh out of the oven, it is possible to reheat them (it won’t be the same, but it can do). The process is pretty easy and it will only take a couple of minutes to get it reheated properly.

All of the methods I list below will get the job done, obviously some will be quicker than others.

Using The Microwave

The microwave is by far the quickest and most effective option available when it comes to reheating a baked potato. You need to ensure that you do not microwave the potato that is wrapped in foil, as the foil in the microwave could lead to disastrous results.

Note: You should remove all the fillings and toppings before reheating the potato, especially sour cream.

Steps

  • Cut the baked potato in two and place in a microwave safe container
  • Place a damp paper towel over the container (this will help it from drying out)
  • Microwave the potato on high for about 1-2 minutes.
  • You can cut the potato in two to check and see if the potato is fully reheated (Some microwaves are more powerful than others)
  • If still cold on the inside, microwave for a couple more seconds.
  • Once your dish is piping out, take out, let it cool and enjoy.
  • You could add a little bit of water if you find the chili to be too thick

Using the Oven

The oven is another excellent method to reheat the baked potato (you probably baked it in there in the first place). While the oven gets the job done, it can take a bit longer than using the microwave.

Note: You should remove all the fillings and toppings before reheating the potato, especially sour cream.

Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Place on a baking sheet.
  • Place in the oven for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Check to ensure that the potato is fully reheated, if not let it stay in the oven for a couple more minutes.
  • Once finished, you can take out and serve.

Using the Skillet

You can always use the skilled to reheat a baked potato, but this is just if you plan on mashing it up. Think of bootleg mashed potatoes or you just want it heated up without having to use the microwave or wait on it in the oven.

Steps:

  • Heat a skillet on medium heat and add a little olive oil/butter to it.
  • Chop up the baked potato and throw it in the heated skillet
  • Stir the potato chunks around, ensuring that each side is fully heated.

The Problem With Reheating Baked Potatoes

There are some concerns with baked potatoes and botulism/food poisoning. This arises when the original baked potato is left in the foil and allowed to cool down for a considerable time period. If you had baked a potato in foil and left it in the aluminum foil for hours, it would be a good idea to discard it. Not removing the foil could lead to the botulinum bacteria growing.

You should never store a baked potato that is still wrapped in the foil inside the refrigerator. Remove the foil before storing.

How to Reheat Quiche: Check Out The One Simple Method That Gets The Job Done

How to Reheat Quiche

How to reheat quiche? This is a pretty common question and the answer is the oven is really the only method which you should use to reheat quiche.

Below, I explain why the oven is your go to option and why you should never ever ever use the microwave (unless it is a food emergency).

Use the Oven to Reheat Quiche

The oven is by far the best option available when it comes to reheating your quiche. It will have it heated up and tasting like it was fresh out of the oven and this is what you are looking for. While the oven does take some time to get it heated up properly, the wait is definitely worth it.

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Place the quiche in an oven safe dish or baking sheet.
  • Cover edges of quiche with foil to avoid burning crust.
  • Let the quiche reheat for about 20-25 minutes or when the internal temperature is 165 degrees Farenheit.
  • Check to ensure that it is fully heated up, once done take out, allow to cool and serve

Why You Should Never Use the Microwave

When you are reheating quiche, the microwave should not even be an option. The reason for this is multi-fold.

  1. Because of the flaky crust of the quiche, putting it in the microwave will cause the crust to get soggy, so while it will be hot, it won’t taste the same as if you had done it in the oven.
  2. Microwaves and anything egg based is usually not a good combination. The microwave at times turns eggs rubbery and that will often make the quiche have a pretty awful texture.
  3. The microwave just cannot replicate what an oven does. Since the quiche was done in the oven, it is best it is reheated in one.

Note: If you are starving or you just don’t care about taste or texture, you can always zap it in the microwave and it will obviously be piping hot. It is not something I recommend, but if you are about that life, then by all means go ahead.

How to Reheat Banana Bread Properly

How do you reheat banana bread? If you landed on this page, I am pretty sure that you are in need of some instruction as to the correct way to get banana bread warmed up properly.

The process of reheating is pretty simple, especially since you have so many options at your disposal. Below, I am going to highlight the best methods to reheat banana bread, some quick, others not so quick……but they all get the job done.

Oven

The oven, while slow, is a pretty good option to use when it comes to reheating your banana bread. It is going to take some time, but if you have a couple of minutes to spare, then the end result should definitely be worth it.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Place the banana bread in an oven safe dish.
  • Place in oven and allow the bread to reheat for 15-25 minutes (the time will vary and this will often depend on if you are reheating it from room temperature or if you had it in the fridge/freezer)
  • Once you feel it has been reheated to the level that you want, take out and enjoy.

Microwave

When it comes to reheating some foods, I am anti-microwave, but the microwave is still a good and quick option that you can use to reheat your banana bread….especially since some people actually use it to make banana bread.

The amount of time that it takes to reheat your banana bread, will depend on if you are doing a slice or a whole loaf. So keep that in mind when you are getting ready to warm up.

Steps:

  • Take the banana bread and place in a microwave safe container.
  • (Optional) You can place a damp paper towel or cloth over the bread to prevent it from drying out.
  • Zap it for maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute (depending on the size and how cold it is).
  • If you find that it is warmed up to your liking, take out, allow to cool and serve.

The Toaster

This is a bit different and depending on the texture of the banana bread, you could actually get away with reheating it inside of a toaster. The big challenge is that banana bread can be pretty crumbly and placing it inside of the toaster can cause it to break apart. If you find that your bread is pretty firm, then you could definitely go with the toaster as a reheating option.

Steps:

  • Cut the banana bread into slices that are big enough to fit inside of a toaster.
  • Let it toast for the desired time and when finished, take it out and enjoy.

How to Reheat Dumplings

How do you reheat dumplings? While it isn’t rocket science, there is a right and a wrong way to get Chinese steamed dumplings heated up properly.

Below, I give you some step-by-step instructions as to how to reheat dumplings using the microwave or the skillet.

#1 – Do Not Re-steam Them!

You really should not be steaming already cooked dumplings as a way to reheat them, as this will cause them to get mushy and soggy. While steaming them is possible, you have to strike that perfect balance of getting them properly heated up and not letting them sit too long and become soggy. That is why the microwave or the skillet is the best option available, as it gets them perfectly hot with not much chance of error.

You can however steam frozen dumplings, as those haven’t been cooked as yet and steam is exactly what they need.

Microwave

The microwave is a pretty good way to reheat dumplings and it is also really quick. In a couple of minutes, you can have them steaming hot and ready to be eaten.

Steps:

  1. First thing is to place the dumplings in a microwave safe container.
  2. Cover with a damp paper towel.
  3. Zap the dumplings for about 45 seconds to 1 minute. The time might be a bit longer, depending on how cold they are.
  4. Once the dumplings have been reheated to your liking, you can take out and enjoy.

The Skillet Is a Good Option

If you are anti-microwave or you do not own one, you could also try reheating the dumplings on the stovetop in a skillet.

This is a pretty quick method as well and will definitely get them piping hot in no time.

Steps:

  1. The first thing you need to do pre-heat the skillet (medium-low heat) on the stovetop and 3-4 tablespoons of water to it. The water will not cause the dumplings to dry out.
  2. Put the dumplings in the skillet and cover the skillet.
  3. Let the dumpling reheat for about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Check to ensure that they are fully reheated, if not you might have to let them stay a little bit longer.
  5. Once fully heated up, take out the dumplings and serve.

As you can see, when it comes to reheating dumplings, you have 2 really good options available to you. Each option is quick and gets the job done. In a couple of minutes, with minimal steps, you should have steaming hot dumplings, ready to enjoy.

How to Reheat Chicken Parmesan

How do you reheat chicken Parmesan? Reheating is pretty simple, but I am surprised you actually have some leftover, as that dish is so good, it usually does not make it for a second go round 😉.

Below, I have done up a pretty short guide that will highlight the best options available to get your amazing chicken dish heated up perfectly.

Oven

If you want your chicken parmesan to be heated properly, the oven is by far the best option…despite it not being the quickest. Using the oven is going to take some time, but you can be sure that the dish will dish just as good as when it was originally made.

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Place the chicken parmesan in an oven safe dish. If it is still in the original dish, you can put that in the oven
  3. Cover with foil.
  4. Place in oven and allow the chicken parm to heat up for 15-20 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. This time could be a lot longer if you are reheating something that was frozen.
  5. 5 minutes before you are set to take it out, remove the foil and allow the cheese to melt and everything to get slightly crispy.
  6. Once you feel it has been reheated to the level that you want, take out and enjoy.

Note: You can also use the toaster oven, using the same instructions as above.

The Microwave

I am not a big fan of the microwave, but it is an option you can consider when looking to reheat your chicken parmesan. Some people are afraid of using the microwave because it won’t have the same taste/texture as if you did it in the oven. While I agree, if you just want to get it hot and not really worried about a heavenly taste…the microwave is a quick 1,2 option.

Steps:

  1. Place the chicken parmesan in a microwave safe plate or container.
  2. You can cover it to ensure it does not mess up the microwave.
  3. Reheat on medium heat for 1 minutes and check if it is steaming hot. Especially, check the center as that is usually the last part to get heated.
  4. If it still needs some more heat, zap it for another 30 seconds to 1 minute for good measure.
  5. Once finished, take out, allow to cool and enjoy.

As you can see, reheating chicken parmesan is not something that is overly complicated. The oven and microwave methods can get your dish steaming hot and almost like when you first had it.

how to reheat hollandaise sauce

Can you reheat hollandaise sauce? Ideally, it is best to serve hollandaise sauce fresh from the stove, as it can be challenging to reheat it, however it is not impossible to do.

Below, is a quick guide highlighting the best way to reheat hollandaise sauce.

The Difficulty in Reheating

When it comes to hollandaise sauce, the big problem is reheating it. This is a sauce that best served fresh, as when you try to reheat it, there is a good chance that you could end up cooking the eggs, or the sauce could end up separating.

There are ways to heat the sauce up, but you have to be very careful with what you do. Below are two reheating options that you can consider.

Microwave

The microwave is a good option to consider when warming up your sauce. You have to do this at a low setting, as you do not want the sauce to split or have the eggs cook.

Steps:

  1. Place the hollandaise sauce in a glass bowl
  2. Microwave for 15 seconds at around 20% power.
  3. Let it sit for about 15 seconds, then reheat again.
  4. Continue the process until the sauce is warmed up fully.

The Stove Top

You can use the stove top as another way to go about reheating your hollandaise sauce. You have to be very carefully as you could end up scrambling the eggs if you do it on a high heat.

Steps:

  1. Place the hollandaise sauce in a pan
  2. Heat on the stove top on a low heat
  3. Stir the sauce around
  4. You can add in some melted butter and water to re-emulsify
  5. Once heated, take out and serve

A Few Tips

  • If you find that the hollandaise sauce separates and won’t recombine, it would be a good idea to add a few drops of water while you are whisking.
  • It is best to make your sauce right before you serve it. If you can’t, you could make it ahead of time and let it sit in a warmer till you are ready to use it. This will cut out having to reheat it.

How to reheat refried beans

How do you reheat refried beans? While it is best when freshly made, you can warm up refried beans pretty easily. The microwave and stove top are all excellent choices and if you keep reading, I will give you the step by step guide below.

Microwave

When it comes to reheating refried beans, the microwave is the quick and effective option. Throw the beans in and zap them for a couple of seconds and you will have them steaming hot.

When reheating refried beans, you should be aware that the microwave does not heat everything evenly. So always check to ensure that the beans are fully heated up.

Steps:

  • Take the beans and place in a microwave safe container or bow.
  • Cover the container with a damp paper towel
  • Heat up at 50% power for about 1-2 minutes
  • Stir the beans around just to ensure that you get even heating.
  • Once you are finished, you can take out, serve and enjoy.

The Stove Top

You could also use the stove top as another method to reheat your refried beans. The stovetop takes a bit more time than the microwave, but you are still able to get the same results.

Steps:

  • Heat pan on the stove top and place the refried beans in there
  • Add a small amount of water or chicken broth and stir the beans
  • Constantly stir, just so that the heat is evenly distributed and that the beans don’t stick to the pan.
  • After about 5 minutes, the beans should be properly heated up
  • Take out and enjoy.

Reheat Fried Plantains

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 It’s probably a crime in some countries to eat reheated fried plantains, but sometimes we can’t do any better right? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Well, for those of you who are looking to reheat these delicious morsels of yumminess, keep reading.

Below, is a short guide that will highlight the best available options to consider when it comes to reheating fried plantains.

You Have to Fry Them Over

If you want to have fried plantains with the somewhat same texture, you are going to have to refry them. It won’t be exactly how they were when they first came out of the frying pan, but it is the best option that you have.

Frying them is not a long process, as you really just want them warmed up and this method will have you done in a couple of minutes.

Steps:

  • Heat a frying pan and pour some oil in it.
  • Take the cold fried plantains and place in the frying pan.
  • Fry the pieces 20-30 seconds on each side.
  • Once finished, take out and place in a plate/container with some paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
  • Once cooled, take out and enjoy.

Using the Broiler

If you for whatever reason do not want to re-fry, you could always use the broiler to reheat fried plantains.

This will actually rejuvenate the plantains, as you get the crispy exterior, while inside remains moist and soft. The only issue is that it takes a bit longer than if you had them in the frying pan.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Place the plantains on a baking sheet (you can line it with foil if you want easy cleanup)
  • Place the baking sheet with the plantains on the broil rack of the oven.
  • Broil for 2-4 minutes. If you find they need a bit more time, you can keep them in longer.
  • Once finished, take out, allow to cool, then serve.

Microwave

Microwaves are a quick option, but when it comes to reheating fried plantains, it might/might not be a good option to consider.

Microwaves and fried foods don’t go together at all and it usually makes anything fried soggy and yucky. With the microwave and plaintains, this might not be the case, especially since you are just doing a quick reheat and the insides are already soft and moist. You definitely won’t be getting the crisp exterior, but at least they will be warmed up.

If you have no other option available, then the microwave it is.

Steps:

  • Take the fried plantains and place in a microwave safe container.
  • (Optional) You can place a damp paper towel or cloth over the bread to prevent it from drying out.
  • Zap it for maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute (depending on how many you have and how cold they are)
  • Once it is warmed up to the way you like it, take out, allow to cool and serve.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Place the garlic knots on a baking sheet and insert inside the oven.
  • Keep them in the oven for about 10 minutes (if at room temperature). If you are heating from the refrigerator, you can keep them in the oven for 15 minutes.
  • Once reheated properly, take out and enjoy.

This is not a difficult process and when heated up properly you should have a nice toasty exterior and a soft enjoyable interior. As you can see, it only takes a couple of minutes to get everything going.

Forget the Microwave

I know you might be tempted to use the microwave to reheat your garlic knots, however, the nuke is really not a good idea. Generally, when you reheat breads in the microwave, they will often get soggy and it loses its texture.

While you can use the microwave, it won’t have the same option as using the oven.

If The Microwave Is Your Only Option?

If you have no other way to warm up the garlic knots and you don’t care about the texture, then the microwave is what you will have to work with.

What YOU’LL NEED:

  • A microwave safe plate
  • Damp paper towel/towel

Steps:

  1. Place the garlic knots on the microwave safe plate.
  2. Cover with the damp paper towel or towel.
  3. Microwave on the medium heat setting for 30 seconds – 1 minute (check to make sure it’s heated properly)
  4. After 30 seconds – 1 minute, if the knots are fully reheated, then take out and enjoy.
  5. Make sure that it’s cool enough before you start eating.
